Robert Preston Meservey was a well-known American stage and film actor and singer of Broadway and cinema. He was a trained musician, playing several instruments, and in high school became interested in theatre.

Pres, Bob or Preston Meservey as publicly known was born June 8, 1918, in Newton, Massachusetts, United States of America but grew up in Los Angeles.

Robert was born to Ruth L. Rea (1895–1973), a garment worker and Frank Wesley Meservey (1899–1996), a record store clerk for American Express. He had only one brother with the name, Frank Meservey.

He was married to Catherine Craig from 1940 to 1987. They never divorced and stayed married to each other until his last breath. The two have no known children since there isn’t much information about their marital past. He in other words led a private and quiet life.

Robert Preston aside from his career as an actor and a singer which earned him many nominations and various awards served in the US Army Air Corps for 3 solid and tough years.

During his military service, he was an S-2 (Intelligence Officer), 386th Bombardment Group (Medium), a B-26 Marauder bomber unit assigned to the 8th Air Force and later to the 9th Air Force, based primarily in England, during World War II.

On March 21, 1987, Robert Preston died of lung cancer after a successful career at the age of 68. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered at the sea.


Robert Preston was known to have attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Los Angeles where he developed an interest in theatre.

Preston later joined Pasadena Community Playhouse where he took classes and studied acting thereby appearing in scores of plays alongside such soon-to-be-well-known actors as Dana Andrews, George Reeves, Victor Mature and Don DeFore.
