  1. So sad to here about Mr. Hughes passing. He was our pitching coach of the 1985 Medford A’s. I was sent down from the Modesto A’s team of the California League, and I met Butch in the Clubhouse. He was there, along with Grady Fuson, our team manager to welcome me to the club. They had already played about 10 games into the season, and I was very upset about being sent down, back to Medford.

As I shook their hands, wearing my noticeable disappointment on my face, I gave them nice firm handshakes. After shaking Butch’s hand, he said “easy up on that grip, you just might hit .300”. Well that made me us all bust out laughing. He was like that, made you feel good, comfortable, relaxed playing the game.

R.I.P. Butch, thank you for making it fun!
