It is with deep sadness that I share with you that COL William “Bill” Johnson of 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, Texas State Guard, lost his battle with cancer and passed away early on the morning of July 21, 2020.
COL Johnson was a devoted husband and father, and true patriot committed to both the citizens of Texas and the United States. COL Johnson completed more than forty-two years of combined service with the United States Army and the Texas State Guard.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1971, and during his 24-year career in the Army served in numerous locations around the world and supported military operations in Europe, Southwest Asia and
COL Johnson joined the Texas State Guard in October 2001 as a Sergeant Major. During his career in the TXSG, COL Johnson was appointed as a Chief Warrant Officer before earning his commission in May 2003. COL Johnson excelled in his assignments throughout more than eighteen years in the Texas State Guard, deploying to every hurricane mission since 2001.
In his civilian career he worked at the Terrell State Hospital, MHMR Lakes Regional, and Parkland Hospital as a social worker. He enjoyed collecting military paraphernalia and old vintage cars.
COL Johnson’s servant leadership and selfless service to his community, state and country is only seconded by his devotion to his family. COL Johnson is survived by his wife Carol, their four children, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Friday at 0915 at the Dallas National Cemetery, however, also due to COVID restrictions the funeral is a family-only event.
