For every start of a journey, there must be an end. The journey of the deceased has sadly come to an end on earth. No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet, death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it, and that is how it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It’s life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.

October 3, 1949 – July 3, 2021
A lifelong scholar and activist, Haunani-Kay Trask was an early and fearless leader of the Hawaiian sovereignty movement, fighting for self-determination of the Hawaii people. A founding member Ka Lahui Hawai’i, the state’s largest sovereignty organization, Trask spoke and wrote boldly about Native Hawaiian rights, institutional racism, gender discrimination and the United Nations Declaration on the rights of the Indigenous Peoples. She often drew ire for her criticism of the United States; responding to disapproval that her harsh approach was “un-Hawaiian,” Trask one famously responded: “I am not soft. I am not sweet.”
The University of Hawaii-Mānoa, where Trask was a tenured professor for more than 30 years, credits her with co-founding the contemporary field of Hawaiian studies, as she was the founding director of the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies on the Mānoa campus.
Additionally, she wrote two books of poetry (“Light in the Crevice Never Seen” and “Night is a Sharkskin Drum”) and a collection of politically provocative essays, “From a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawaii.” She also co-wrote and co-produced the award-winning documentary “Act of War: The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation,” which premiered in 1994. She is widely considered one of the most influential women in Hawaiian history. – Oiwi TV wrote on Facebook
ʻŌiwi TV mourns the loss of legendary leader Haunani K. Trask. She was the sharp tip of a spear in a movement that fought for our people, helping us march toward a better understanding of where we came from – historically and politically.
Haunani fearlessly advocated for our people by speaking truth to power, and she did not waiver in saying out loud the actual history that so many have tried to make us forget. She inspired a generation of Hawaiians to not only learn our history but to engage at every level with the truth from a new and grounded perspective on where we need to go next as a community. Those conversations were never easy, and those ideas were never popular in the mainstream. And yet now, a generation later, we can see that Hawai’i is different because of her.
We send our aloha to the Trask ʻohana, Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi, the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, and the countless other organizations that she fed, grew, and inspired.- ʻŌiwi TV also wrote.
