Albert Lincoln Roker Jr. was born on August 20, 1954, in the borough of Queens, New York City, New York, to Isabel and Albert Lincoln Roker Sr. His mother is of Jamaican descent whiles his father worked as a bus driver and is of Bahamian descent.

Regarding his education, Al Roker attended the State University of New York at Oswego from where he graduated in 1976 with a B.A. in communications.

Al Roker began his career with NBC in 1978 after he was hired at WKYC in Cleveland, which was then an NBC-owned and operated station. He later rose to a wider exposure after David Letterman asked him to join in an elevator race on an episode of the talk show Late Night with David Letterman.
