Human Rights' Great Advocate Dewa Mavhinga Passed Away

The Southern Africa director with the Africa Division at Human Rights Watch Dewa Mavhinga sadly passed away today (December 4, 2021) at the age of 55. May the legend rest in peace.

Dewa had a decade of research and advocacy experience in Zimbabwe as well as in Southern Africa. Before entering Human Rights Watch, Dewa served as the Regional Coordinator for Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition located in Johannesburg. 

The heartbreaking was confirmed by some unofficial sources including Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono who announced on his Twitter account, “I am gutted to hear that @dewamavhinga has passed on. He was a great advocate for human rights in Zimbabwe and beyond.

He then came to continue, “A gentle giant who was always there for anyone who was facing political persecution. You did so much brother for all of us. May your soul Rest In Peace!”

In 2012, Mavhinga formed the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute, a public policy research think-tank in Harare. The author was a recipient of the British Chevening and Canon Collins Trust scholarship.

Dewa held a bachelor of law honors degree (LLB) from the University of Zimbabwe and later, a master of law degree in international human rights (LLM) from Essex University, United Kingdom.
