IndyCar racer Robert William “Bobby” Unser’s cause of death was clarified after reporter Jenna Fryer confirmed that the father of Robby Unser passed away Sunday night (May 2) at the age of 87.

Bobby Unser, winner of the Indianapolis 500 on three occasions in three different decades, was the brother of Al Unser, Jerry Unser, and Louis Unser, and the uncle of Al Unser Jr. and Johnny Unser.

He claimed his first win at the Indy 500 In 1968, while he went on to win it for second time in 1975 and a controversial win six years later.

Jenna Fryer, the reporter of Associated Press, has confirmed the heartbreaking news with members of the Unser family that Bobby passed away on Sunday night.

Beloved Bobby kicked of racing at the Indianapolis 500 in 1963 that was a tough go as he crashed soon and ended the race in 33rd place. Un ser was additionally at the center of the controversial 1981 finish where he and Mario passed automobiles under caution after pitting at the same time.

Unser became the winner of the race; he was stripped of it a day later and the win was awarded to Mario Andretti, and then was given the win finally after a lawsuit. Unser received a lot of backlashes after that controversial win and Unser ended up retiring at the end of the year. He had speculated at returning at one point; although, he made the retirement official in 1983.

Racer Bobby Unser’s Cause of Death Announced as Natural Causes

According to Fryer’s tweet, Bobby Unser’s cause of death was natural causes; she wrote, “The family of Bobby Unser says he passed away last night of natural causes at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico of natural causes. He was 87.”

Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Bobby was the third oldest of 4 brothers. When he turned 1 his family went to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1950, when he was only 15, he won his first championship in Southwest Modified Stock Cars.

From 1953 to 1955, he entered the Air Force as a top competition sharpshooter in military matches, however, he later deeply regretted it. In 1955 Bobby and brothers Jerry and Al Unser chose to continue racing careers in USAC. Unfortunately, his brother Jerry Unser passed away in an automobile crash at the Indianapolis 500, in 1959.

The news came while the American former professional stock car racing driver, Eric McClure’s cause of death is still unknown after he passed away Sunday (May 2, 2021) at the age of 42.
