The great pianists had been experiencing health problems for a long time. He was hospitalized for the past two weeks and passed away of Covid complications.

Barry Harris was born in Detroit, Michigan, on December 15, 1929. He was an award-winning influential pianist, composer, and lecturer, NEA Jazz Master, and member of the American Jazz Hall of Fame.

He was critically regarded as one of the main hard pop stylists who appeared in the second half of the 20th century. He was also an important part of the Detroit jazz scene.

Harris began learning the piano at the age of four. In his teens, Barry learned bebop largely by ear, imitating solos by Powell. Harris described Powell’s style as being the “epitome” of jazz.

Barry performed for dances in clubs and ballrooms. He was based in Detroit through the 1950s and worked with Thad Jones, Miles Davis, and Sonny Stitt, and substituted for Junior Mance in the Gene Ammons band.

In 1956, Barris toured briefly with Max Roach, after Richie Powell, the band’s pianist and younger brother of Bud Powell, passed away in a car crash.

Is Pianist Barry Harris Dead?

Shocked fans wonder is pianist Barry Harris dead? Jazz Maestro has passed away on December 8, 2021, at the age of 91.

The legendary pianist performed with Cannonball Adderley‘s quintet and on television with them. After moving to NYC, Harris worked as an educator and performed with Illinois Jacquet, Yusef Lateef, Dexter Gordon, and Hank Mobley.

Between 1965 and 1969, Harris worked extensively with Coleman Hawkins at the Village Vanguard. He lived with Monk at the Weehawken, New Jersey home of the jazz patron Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter in the 1070s. In 1974, Barry substituted for Monk in rehearsals at the New York Jazz Repertory Company.
