Legendary singer best known for his rock ballad Music passed away on December 5, 2021, at the age of 72. John Miles’ cause of death relates to a short illness.

His manager has confirmed the heartbreaking news. According to a statement on Facebook, John died peacefully in his sleep with his family at his bedside.

“He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and we will all miss him more than any words could ever express,” a statement posted on Miles’ official Facebook page announced.

“He will live on forever in our hearts, and with the wonderful musical legacy he has left behind. You were our first love and will be our last.”

The message echoed the words of John’s hit: “Music was my first love / And it will be my last / Music of the future / And music of the past.

John Miles was born on 23 April 1949 in Jarrow, County Durham. He was a rock music vocalist, keyboard player, and guitarist, mainly known for his 1976 Top 3 UK hit single “Music.”

Miles won the “Outstanding Musical Achievement” award at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards.

In 1975 Miles signed a recording contract with the Decca UK label, and released four albums Rebel, Stranger in the City, Zaragon (1978), and More Miles Per Hour (1979).

John also charted in the UK with “Highfly,” “Remember Yesterday,” and “Slow Down.” Most of his songs were co-written with the bassist Bob Marshall.

At the peak of his success, in 1976 and 1977, he made several great appearances on the weekly pop TV show Supersonic. Two singles from the debut album reached the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, “Highfly” peaked at Number 68, followed by “Music,” which stalled at No. 88.

“Slow Down” was Miles’ biggest US chart hit, peaking at No. 2 on the disco chart and at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1977. This hit was later featured in the 1979 film Players, starring Dean Paul Martin and Ali MacGraw.

In 2017, John received an outstanding contribution prize at the Progressive Rock awards. As he accepted the award, he said: “I think I made a contribution, but that was way back in the 70s.”

“I suppose it has endured, though. And the song Music has endured as well, and that was the biggest hit worldwide. I’m a man of few words, and there are eight lines of lyrics in that song. I get to work with orchestras these days too, which is fantastic,” he added.

John’s manager of 50 years paid tribute to the late musician, describing him as gentle and ‘kind.’ “John was not only so kind and gentle but a brilliant musician and songwriter on the world stage,” he said.
