“Lou was truly one of a kind, someone who never met a stranger,” Forma said. “He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends, which included an extended baseball family.”
The ballpark, named Riverfront Stadium with a $75 million price tag, was a rush job completed in little more than a year in time for the Pacific Coast League season. The Wind Surge was set to debut in April, but the Covid-19 pandemic led to the cancelation of the minor-league season.
Schwechheimer never got to see opening day there.
“The Wind Surge team will work tirelessly to fulfill Lou’s dreams and visions for the great city of Wichita, a place he was proud to call home. We will ensure his legacy lives forever at Riverfront Stadium,” Forma said.
Schwechheimer is survived by his wife, Jane, and daughter, Jen. Funeral services are pending, Forma said.
