Leslie West, guitarist who helped usher in heavy metal rock, dies at 75. Leslie West, whose band Mountain helped lay the groundwork for heavy metal with fuzzy, hard-riffing songs such as the cowbell-enhanced “Mississippi Queen,” died Dec. 23 in Palm Coast, Fla. He was 75. His death was confirmed by his publicist.

Larry West Weinstein, West’s brother, confirmed the musician’s death to Rolling Stone.

A cause of death was not immediately available, but West suffered cardiac arrest at his home near Daytona, Florida on Monday and was rushed to a hospital, where he never regained consciousness.
