Prof. C.S. Seshadri, one of the leaders of Indian mathematics in the post-Independence era, passed away late on July 17 in Chennai. He was 88.

He was a leader in the field of algebraic geometry, he made breakthroughs that lie at the base of many branches of this profound discipline. Themes that can be traced in whole or substantial part to Seshadri include projective modules over polynomial rings, geometric invariant theory, moduli theory, vector bundles on curves, the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem, parabolic bundles, standard monomial theory and the geometry of Schubert varieties.
He continued to be engaged in subtle mathematics till the end, much of it in a long-running collaboration with younger colleague V. Balaji.
