22 July 2020 | Suva, Fiji
The following statement has been issued this afternoon by the Leader of the Party & Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Maj. Gen. (Ret’d) Sitiveni L. Rabuka on behalf of the Executives, Members and Supporters of SODELPA on the sudden passing of former Party Vice President, Turaga na Taukei Navolau, Ro Dona Takaleiyale.
“The Social Democratic Liberal Party is deeply saddened with the sudden passing of one of our former Vice President’s and traditional leader, Ro Dona Takaleiyale.
“Ro Dona was pivotal in the Party in his role helping SODELPA prepare for the 2014 national elections, a time when things were still very challenging democratically, and there were few leaders willing to stand up for the rights of our people. Ro Dona’s role was even more crucial given his own traditional obligations to my predecessor, Na Gone Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi, Hon. Ro Teimumu Kepa.
“When we received the news of his passing, all Party members were obviously saddened especially those who worked closely with Ro Dona. The late Taukei Navolau was renowned for his easy nature and his ability to put everybody around him at ease, even in the most tense of situations. Not one to be easily swayed, Ro Dona was clear with his vision about the role of the Vanua in the Fijian political spectrum and he would often share his views on this, as well as share his thoughts and beliefs for a multi-racial Fiji. A former Prison Officer and someone who worked in the tourism industry extensively, he was a well-rounded community man.
“In his role in SODELPA, he was very instrumental in the various awareness and campaign programmes by the Party particularly in areas of the Vanua as he was well connected which enabled the Party to visit different villages and communities. Of course, it all began during the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) days under the late former Prime Minister Hon. Laisenia Qarase when the Marama Bale joined SDL to run for office in 2001.
“Some youth members have had the opportunity to travel and sit with him using that as a platform to learn about Vanua protocols and traditions, we’ve seen its success as some of our youth members have carried out these various protocols such as veiqaraqaravi during visitations or gatherings. This is one of the many impacts that Ro Dona has made on our youth and the Party as a whole.
“SODELPA is totally indebted to the family of Ro Dona Takaleiyale and the Vanua o Burebasaga. We extend to you our sincere gratitude for sharing your husband, father and a proud son of Rewa to engage with the Party and be instrumental in the spreading of the message of goodwill and unity.
“We hereby extend to you all our heartfelt condolences, in particular to the Takaleiyale Family, the Vanua o Burebasaga and its Paramount Chief Na Gone Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi during this difficult time.
“Ni gole saka ena vakacegu ni Turaga, Taukei Navolau. You will be sorely missed.”
