Former Texas Longhorns running back Jim Bertelsen’s cause of death has not been announced at this time after Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman reported that he passed away this week at the age of 71. Rest in peace.
Bohls confirmed the heartbreaking news on Friday, tweeting, “Legendary Texas running back Jim Bertelsen, who helped lead the Longhorns to three SWC titles and a national championship, has died, several UT sources said.” He added, “He was 71.”
Spending five years in the NFL and all with the Rams, im Bertelsen was a second-round pick in 1972, going 30th overall to LA. His best season was in 1973 when he rushed for 854 yards and four touchdowns, while additionally grabbing 19 passes for 267 yards and one touchdown. He got a Pro Bowl selection.
In his five seasons in Los Angles, Bertelsen:
- Carried the ball 614 times for 2,466 yards
- Scored 16 touchdowns on the ground
- Appeared in five playoff games,
- Rushing for 136 yards on 32 carries
