University of Texas linebacker Jake Ehlinger, Sam Ehlinger’s brother’s cause of death, seems suspicious after Austin police announced he was found dead Thursday (May 6) at the young age of 20. Rest in peace.
According to Police, they received a call at approximately 12:10 p.m; they arrived in the 1200 block of West 22nd Street, where they found Jake Ehlinger’s dead body. He reportedly was discovered in a residential neighborhood less than a mile off the University of Texas at Austin campus.

A two-star prospect Jake Ehlinger moved to Texas in 2019 after his high school playing career at Westlake, did not play for two seasons. He had been with the Longhorns for two years but did not play in any games in those two seasons. He was set to be a student for Texas through the 2021 season.
His older brother, Sam Ehlinger was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round of the NFL draft Saturday. Jake’s face was randomly shown on the NFL Network where a photo of Sam was thought to be, and Sam loved it.
“Good, good,” Sam said with a huge grin during his availability with reporters. “Jake deserves all the screen time you can get.”

Quickly after the tragic news released, many of beloved Jake Ehlinger’s friends and fans expressed their sadness on social media by posting their tributes. Ross Bjork, Texas A&M athletic director, was one of the first ones who publicly offer condolences to Ehlinger’s heartbroken family.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian described late Jake as a “tremendous person” and “everything you could ask for in a student-athlete.”
“Being a Longhorn meant everything to him, and he truly embodied all that it means to be one,” Sarkisian continued. “In the short time we were able to get to know him, he always was a joy to be around and gave everything he had in workouts, meetings, practice and in life.”

Someone reacted to the shocking news, writing, “Devastating. Heartbreaking. I hope the Ehlinger family, the @TexasFootball program, and all who knew Jake can find peace in this horrific time.”
Jeff Jones also tweeted, “I hated hearing today’s news about Jake Ehlinger. This young man was as Central Texas as it gets. Sending prayers to Jake’s family and friends.”
Athletics director Chris Del Conte released a statement, writing, “Jake was an amazing young man from an extraordinary family with such a bright future ahead of him. It’s just such a tragedy that we are all really struggling with. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones and friends, especially the Ehlinger family and our entire football program. Jake’s family — Sam, Jena and Morgen — are such vital parts of our Longhorn family, and we will be here to support them in any and every way we can during this very difficult time.”

In January of 2019, Jake Ehlinger entered the program as a walk-on with the program. The news of him joining Texas led to a number of celebratory tweets from some of the Longhorns’ roster at the time, such as a few from the linebacker unit.
This spring, he suffered no injury. Before that, he appeared for Westlake High School and caused the team head to back-to-back 6A State semifinal plays.

Two brothers grew up like close friends; in 2018, Jake announced he texted or talked with his brother Sam on the phone every day.
He also said about Sam, “Sam taught me everything I know today,” he said. “He’s always been there for me and the whole family. Smart. Caring. He is the most incredible person, a good brother.”
Just five days ago, Jake was celebrating with Sam, their sister Morgen and their mother Jena, for Sam’s drafting by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round.
