Unfortunately, the professional wrestler who was known by his ring name, Blackjack Lanza, passed away. His cause of death has not been clarified yet, but his death news has been confirmed.

Jim Ross, AEW Original, WWE, NWA, & National Wrestling Halls of Fame, released Lanza’s death news on Twitter, on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, writing: “Just heard from old, Winnipeg friend Bob Holliday that Jack Lanza has passed away at the age of 86. Jack was our lead agent during the Attitude Era. Helluva hand.”

Blackjack Lanza, whose real name was John Lanza, was trained by Minnesota territory promoter Verne Gagne but started his career in the South for NWA Mid-America in the early 1960s.

He traveled the wrestling territories of the US. He spent time in St. Louis, Mid-Atlantic, Indianapolis, and the WWWF and Georgia Championship Wrestling and worked with the Von Erichs in Dallas.

Then he started working the cowboy gimmick which he was most known for. He eventually teamed up with Mulligan there as The Blackjacks. Lanza was a staple of Vern Gagne’s Minnesota-based territory along with his tag partner Blackjack Mulligan throughout the 1960s and 1970s. However, his only AWA Tag title win was with Bobby Duncum.

He inducted Heenan into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004, and Brain returned the favor for The Blackjacks that they were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Bobby Heenan in 2006. He was a one-time WWA World Tag Team Champion, a one-time WWWF World Tag Team Champion, and a one-time NWA American Tag Team Champion.

Lanza made his pro wrestling retirement in 1985. He later worked for Vince Jr. WWE as a road agent and producer. He had run with WWE, the AWA, WWA, the NWA, GCW, Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, and others.

A fan tweeted: “I met him once at the airport in Las Vegas after an event in 1999. When I asked him for his autograph, he said, “Aww, come on young man. You don’t want my autograph, get some of these guys, my time has passed.” We talked for a few and I left with an autograph and great memory. RIP”

One wrote: “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Jack Lanza. He was a man’s man, respected and beloved by all. He worked for and loved WWE for many years. His loyalty and dedication will never be forgotten.”
