Born March 9, 1936 in Natchez, Mississippi, Mickey Gilley had a ardour for music from a younger age. In line with The New York Occasions, Gilley and his cousins would sing gospel harmonies after they weren’t “sneaking into native juke joints … to listen to blues and honky-tonk music.” Gilley’s cousins have been none apart from musicians Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart, who Deadline explains had an awesome affect on Gilley’s music.
Whereas The New York Occasions reviews Gilley’s mom purchased him a piano when he was simply 10, it took him a couple of years to heat as much as the instrument. “I began taking part in piano after I was about 13 years previous,” Gilley informed Chris Morris at Selection in 2016. “I first began up on guitar. I discovered that the piano was just a little extra fascinating to me … And with my cousin Jerry Lee hitting with ‘Entire Lotta Shakin” again within the ’50s, I felt at the moment like if he might do it, I might do it, too.”
“Ooh Wee Child” was Gilley’s first single in 1957. Nevertheless, it acquired little acclaim on the time, per The New York Occasions. It wouldn’t be till 1959 that one in all Gilley’s songs would attain the music charts. That was with “Is It Unsuitable (For Loving You),” which featured fellow nation celebrity Kenny Rogers taking part in bass.
Whereas “Is It Unsuitable (For Loving You)” charted, Gilley’s main successes wouldn’t come till a lot later in his life, after an article in Esquire launched him into Hollywood superstardom.
